Every year the Columbia Gorge Aviation Association (CGAA) offers two scholarships of $1,000 each for flight training. The Scholarship is awarded to high school students interested in starting an aviation carrier. Our association is made up of about seventy-five pilots in the mid-Columbia area interested in promoting general aviation. The scholarship is funded through donations from these members and through revenues from our annual Fly-In. The Private Pilot Certificate is the first step to a career in aviation, which takes approximately 45 - 55 hours of flight training. Total cost is around $6,000, depending on the aptitude and dedication of student. The trainee must be 16 years old when they start training and be 17 years old to when they take the final test for their Private Pilot's certificate.
To qualify for the CGAA scholarship, the student MUST:
-
Be between the ages of 16 and 19
-
Participate in the FAA Private Pilot Ground School. This course covers all knowledge areas required to pass the FAA knowledge test for the Private Pilot's certificate. Classic Wings has instructors who teach this course at Hood River. Classes are held once per week for ten weeks. Cost of the course is $250. Books and materials are additional $125.
-
Upon conclusion of the course, pass the FAA knowledge test with a minimum score of 90%
At the end of the year, the two students with the highest test score will be awarded a scholarship worth $1,000 towards flight training.
Any young person of average intelligence can pass the tests; however, dedication, motivation and a willingness to study hard will be necessary. Basic math skills are needed and the course material is considered college level. Course materials are available from Classic Wings and may be previewed.
